How does a TENS Machine work?

1. Electrical Impulses Block Pain Signals:

  • A TENS machine works by delivering gentle electrical impulses through electrode pads placed on the skin's surface. These impulses travel along nerve pathways and effectively block pain signals from reaching the brain.

2. Gate Control Theory:

  • The Gate Control Theory of pain suggests that the electrical impulses from the TENS machine "close the gate" to the brain, preventing pain messages from being transmitted. Instead, the brain receives the sensation of the electrical impulses, which are typically perceived as a tingling or buzzing sensation.

3. Endorphin Release:

  • TENS machines stimulate the body's natural painkillers, endorphins. When the electrical impulses activate sensory nerves, it triggers the release of endorphins, which are the body's feel-good hormones. These endorphins act as natural pain relief, helping to further alleviate discomfort.

4. Modulating Pain Perception:

  • The continuous use of a TENS machine during labour or for pain relief can modulate the perception of pain. It doesn't eliminate pain entirely but often makes it more manageable and less intense, allowing the user to cope better with discomfort.

5. Adjustable Settings for Personalized Relief:

  • TENS machines are highly customizable. Users can adjust the intensity, frequency, and duration of the electrical impulses to suit their comfort level and the specific type of pain they are experiencing. This flexibility ensures a personalised and effective pain relief experience.

In summary, a TENS machine works by using electrical impulses to interfere with the transmission of pain signals to the brain, triggering the release of natural painkillers, and modulating the perception of pain. It offers a non-invasive and drug-free approach to pain relief, which can be especially valuable during labour and various other pain-inducing conditions.

Never use a TENS machine under the following circumstances:

  • Without talking to a midwife or doctor first
  • Before you are 36 weeks pregnant
  • When you’re in a shower, bath, or birth pool
  • If you have broken skin or a healing scar where you want to place the pads

TENS machines are typically handheld, allowing the user to control the intensity of the electrical pulses, providing a sense of control and empowerment during labour

4. Mobility and Flexibility:

5. Safe for mother and baby:

A TENS machine is generally considered safe for both the mother and baby, as it doesn’t involve drugs or invasive procedures

  • If you want your birth partner to massage your back, they will have to work around the pads

Can the TENS Machine be used in water?

Absolutely not. The TENS machine is an electrical device and cannot be used in water. Please remove it prior to using the shower of bath for pain relief

Included in your pack are four single use electrodes - 2 for around your bra line and the other 2 just above you underwear line. Please only apply them to your back and never apply them to your abdomen. You may need some assistance to put them on. Enhance Your Birth Experience with Hypnobirthing...

Hypnobirthing Australia Positive Birth Course

What is Hypnobirthing?

Hypnobirthing is a childbirth method that focuses on preparing parents for gentle birth. In hypnobirthing classes, you will learn proven techniques in a well-thought-out program of deep relaxation, visualisation, and self-hypnosis. All of these are designed to help you achieve a more comfortable birth. Hypnobirthing encourages a calm, peaceful, and natural pregnancy, birth, and bonding experience for families.

When should I start Hypnobirthing classes?

You can begin hypnobirthing any time, but we recommend that the optimal time to start your course is between 20 and 30 weeks. This will give you time to practise the self-hypnosis, relaxation and other effective techniques for gentle, easy birthing but also ensures that the course is still fresh in your mind. If you are outside of that range please don’t worry, you can definitely still attend the classes and achieve a beautiful, calm birth.

Who do I bring to Hypnobirthing classes?

Bring yourself and your birth partner/companion to your hypnobirthing classes. Your birth partner can be your partner, doula, sister, friend, mother – whoever you feel will best support you throughout your pregnancy and birth. However, you are also welcome to come solo if you prefer.

Should I still attend hospital antenatal classes?

The Hypnobirthing Australia Course offers extensive natural childbirth education. While hospital antenatal classes focus on medical interventions, hypnobirthing covers the entire birth process, pregnancy expectations, labour preparation, fear release, and techniques like relaxation, breathing, visualizations, and deepening exercises. We believe in the power of knowledge, so combining both antenatal and hypnobirthing classes empowers you to make informed choices. Ultimately, the decision to attend either or both courses is yours to make.

Will I be unconscious or will I remember my birth experience?

Despite misconceptions and misinformation, you are definitely not unconscious during self-hypnosis. The Hypnobirthing mother is deeply relaxed, but she is also an active participant in the labour process. Though she is deeply relaxed, she is totally aware and may return to a conversant state or choose to become mobile whenever she desires. Hypnobirthing mothers often find that they experience time distortion and are not distracted by other people or their birthing environment, while they focus on their birthing and their baby

How much do hypnobirthing classes cost?

The full 12 hour group course is $550

The full 12 hour private course is $750

The refresher course is $350

Each course includes a parent folio of resources valued at $200

What do we learn during the course?

The full course is 12 hours and broken into 4x 3hour sessions:

- Unit 1: Creating and Maintaining a Positive Mindset

- Unit 2: Choices, Knowledge and Tools for Empowered Birthing

- Unit 3: Preparing Mind and Body for Birth

- Unit 4: Birth - Bringing it all Together
